Willem Dafoe Directs the 2026 Venice Theatre Biennale "ALTER NATIVE"

One of the most beloved character actors in American cinema is also one of Europe's most respected theatre directors, and in 2026 Venice is his stage. Willem Dafoe directs the 54th International Theatre Festival at La Biennale di Venezia — ALTER NATIVE — running June 7 through 21 at the Biennale grounds. The festival is part of the broader 2026 Biennale calendar that also includes architecture, cinema, dance, and music programs across the year.

Dafoe's theatre direction draws on his decades with the experimental Wooster Group in New York, and his Biennale program is expected to lean hard on avant-garde staging, international collaboration, and the kind of high-risk programming that the Venice Biennale has always used its theatre festival to platform. Choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor directs the Dance Festival (July 17 – August 1), and composer Caterina Barbieri directs the Contemporary Music Festival (October 10-24).
